History of Daniel Island Daniel Island is filled with rich history dating back to the late 1600´s. Once home to the Native American tribe known as the Etiwan, the island was later inhabited by some of the first English settlers. These settlers established the port city of Charles Town. By the end of the 17th century, a number of renowned Charlestorians owned property on Daniel Island. In 1740 the island was officially named Daniel Island in honor of the Robert Daniel family who at one point was governor of the colony of Carolina. Over the next 200 years Daniel Island, accessible only by boat, was divided up into several large plantations where farming was the main industry. In 1947, Harry Frank Guggenheim purchased the Island for cattle ranching and use as a family fishing and hunting retreat. Upon his death in 1971, the island passed to the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation. The foundation sponsored a group of leading land planners and urban designers to develop a master plan that would ensure the property was responsibly developed in a way that would respect the history and heritage of the region. In 1997, the island was sold to the Daniel Island Company who is continuing to develop the island in accordance to the vision outlined in the master plan.
